I like this – if you research the etymology of the word ‘civil,’ it goes back farther than the Latin ‘civilis’ to a PIE word that has to do with those we share a home with, lie with, call family. Essentially, at the very root of our modern word, ‘civilization,’ is a meaning that includes all whom we dwell with. To my mind, this includes all the things with which we are connected. Thus, I would say for us to have any civilization at all, we would need to include all living things in our concept for sacred and natural rights; and realize that there are no man-made borders that sever our connections to all who dwell with us on our Earth-Mother.
What a wonderfully said response. Our connection to the rest of the natural world is so complete it’s almost farcical that we continue to deny it. When you see a gorilla touching her baby it’s the most human connection imaginable. How we can draw a line and say, ‘This side have rights, that side doesn’t’ is criminal. Ultimately that arrogance will be the end of us all.
