“I Am” – A 10-Year Old Boy’s Poem About Aspergers
“My 10-year-old son with Asperger’s was asked to write a poem for school titled ‘I Am’. He was given the first 2 words in every sentence. This is what he wrote.”
Since it was first posted on Facebook April 10, the poem written by Benjamin Giroux has gone viral.
Another parent commented;
“So beautiful made me cry. I’m a single dad. My 14 year old son is autistic with Asperger’s. Reading this made me feel like I almost got to look into my son’s head.”
Having his son express so much emotion was something new for Benjamin’s father, Sonny Giroux.
He told Today.com;

Wow..so touching and profoundly sad..,.my partner has Asperger’s as his child who is not diagnosed and shamed by his mother to even think he had the same mind as his father, sadly he is lost to us now as his mothers rage tore him away from our loving home, but I pray for anyone who feels this way and for those who have Asperger’s please embrace your differences as they are unique and beautiful too~!

Thanks but no he isnt, she will deny him as that would mean accepting she was wrong about his father’s set of challenges in life. Pride steals and ego damages. 😦

tried and lost that battle..as his dad was easily discredited due to his own aspergers :(. Cost us 140000 in court …and were worse off after as the boy is now alienated

That’s so saddening. But you’d think his teachers would be asking questions, they must surely be aware that he’s different to the other kids, and they must have encountered autistic kids before. They have a duty of care to raise issues.
