Random Fact: 2017

2017 is the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution in Russia. It was on November 7, but that was still October on the Julian calendar.

It’s also the centenary of the founding of the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals in England. Additionally, it is the bicentenary of Jane Austen’s death and marks the 300th anniversary of the first ballet performed in Britain: The Loves Of Mars And Venus at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

It is 500 years since Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses on a church door to launch Protestantism.

2017 also marks 1,000 years since King Cnut (Canute) divided England into four earldoms: Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia and Northumbria.

Word centenaries include moronic (first used in 1917), referendum (1817) and antelope (1417).
